In a recent article I wrote on our website www.sourcecentral.co.uk, I explain the concept of BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) ie the trend for employees bringing their own client devices into the corporate environment, generally as an alternative to company provided laptops or desktops. This sounds great as it should reduce the cost of corporate hardware and provide greater flexibility and choice - but it also of course brings many challenges and complexities.
Ultimately, it’s a trend (enabled by virtualisation and DaaS) that is not going away and it’s one that companies must accept and adapt to, as employees will begin to demand it, but what will it mean for corporate IT departments or outsourced IT departments? The key themes are planning and flexibility and both are examined in the article. The interesting question for me is how long it will be before BYOD is BAU?
